INTRODUCTION

Looking to the importance of good study habits,it was thought to construct and standardise an inventory to find out what typesof study habits the  secondary school pupil have. For this some students were interviewed and questions were asked about how they study at home whether they plan their work, what time they devote to different subjects;why they devote different time to different subjects etc.The answer were recorded and used to frame ststements to the list. The statements that are prepared thus, fall into the following seven areas:

·Home environment  and planning of work.

·Reading and note making

·Planning of subjects

·Habits of concentration

·Preparation for exam

·General habits and attitudes

·School Environment

The list was finalised and it was decided to scale each statement on five point scale with a view to getting more exact responses from students. The  five pouintare:

·Always

·Often

·Sometimes

·Hardly

·Never

In case of the item depicting good study habits the, student is to give 5 marks if he puts a tick inthe column of always.Four, three, two and one marks are to begiven if he puts the tick mark in the column of often, sometimes, hardly and never, respectively.

In case of the statement depicting bad study habits, the score is to be assigned in reverse order that is always one marks, often two marks, sometimes three marks, hardly four marks and never fivemarks. Thus the high score on the inventory will indicate good study habits and validity.

The present study habits inventory consists of 45 statements.Out of these 45 statements, some of them depict good habits while some of them depict poor habits of study. Therefore it is very important to understand the scheme of marking of statements depicting good habits. For example "i work according to the time table".This statement depicts good study habits, therefore the tick placed in the first column be given five marks.

Give four marks if it is in second column. If it is in third column give three marks..Give two and one marks if the tickmark is in the fourth and fifth column respectively. In the same way if the statement indicates bad study habits, give marks in the reverse order. For example"I study only that subject  I am interested in".
